CODE OF CONDUCT
PUNCTUAL ... PROFESSIONAL ... POLITE ... PLEASANT ... PATIENT
PUNCTUAL: Please be punctual at all times. All shoots have a very tight schedule and it is of utmost importance to be on time. The crew, which sometimes number 40/50 people cannot be expected to wait for you.
PROFESSIONAL: Remember you are working and hired to do a job for the day. You are expected to act in a professional manner towards your colleagues, crew and especially towards the director and assistant director. Although you may be tempted, please refrain from giving advice or suggestions to the crew as they do not appreciate being told what to do by the artists. Make sure your cellphone is switched off on set.
POLITE: Caterers provide meals for the crew and artists during the course of the day. Please be polite and courteous at all times. Remember they cannot cater for each person’s individual tastes. The budget for the particular shoot will determine the generosity of the menu. It is a rule on all film sets for the crew to eat first, therefore do not be offended should the crew members go to the front of the queue. They have to return to set to prepare for the next scene.
PLEASANT: Enjoy the day, try and be pleasant to your colleagues. Should you have a complaint speak to your co coordinator. Please refrain from causing discontent by complaining to the other artists.
PATIENT: To be involved in the film industry, patience is of utmost importance. You will find that you spend most of your day either waiting around for your next scene or you will have to be patient while the director does take after take after take. Do not ask what time you are likely to finish as filming is unpredictable. Should you have other engagements that will restrict your working hours, please do not accept the job at all. We suggest you take a book or magazine to help pass the time.

BRIEF OF THE BASICS
You will be contacted for availability for shoots or castings. However should you repeatedly turn down jobs, we will be hesitant about contacting you in the future.

WHAT IS:
a
An Extra: used as part of a crowd in the background.
b
A feature: someone who supports the lead artists and is seen on screen for more than 3 seconds. (This only applies to commercials)
c
A lead: the main character in the scene.
d
A co-ordinator: the person responsible for all the characters.
The coordinator will have the arrival form and release form for you to sign. Should you have any problems on set the coordinator is the person to speak to.
e
The saying “Check the gate” When the producer thinks they have got the perfect shot or enough shots of that scene they will check the camera gate before going onto the next scene.
f
The saying “It’s a wrap” This will indicate the end of the shoot.
In other words it is time to go home.
g

Director, assistant director (A.D.) and 2nd A.D. needless to say this is the pecking order of the people in charge of the shoot. The A.D. or 2nd A.D. will more often than not be the person giving most of the instructions on set

h
A Casting: Is mainly for features and leads. This is where the selection process takes place. You will be briefed beforehand on the, casting date, product, character, shoot dates, fee and type of job i.e: commercial, TV, film etc. On arrival, you will be given a number and a form to complete. When your number is called, you will be taken into the studio, where you will be positioned and asked to introduce yourself and agency to the camera. For a stills shoot, only photographs will be taken and for a live shoot, you may be required to act out a small part, either with supplied dialogue or adlib. Please remember to be assertive, confident and to speak clearly.
PROCESS
1
As an extra, you will be briefed on the product, character, shooting time and date, fee and type of job ie: commercial, TV, film etc. You will be requested to take 3 or more outfits of clothing with you to the shoot.
2
In a feature or lead, the wardrobe department on shoot will provide clothing, make-up etc. to you.
3
More often than not, transport to the shoots is provided from a central meeting point i.e: Green Point Stadium. On arrival at the meeting point you will be expected to sign in. On return at the end of the shoot you will be required to sign the release form. This is essential for payment purposes.
4
While on set you will be instructed by the co-coordinator, assistant director and director on what to do and how to do it. Please be co-operative and attentive at all times. REMEMBER YOU ARE THERE TO WORK NOT TO PLAY, even though it can be great fun. Should you need to use toilet during a take, ask the co-coordinator or assistant director as they are responsible for you at all times. However it is advisable to make sure you answer nature’s call during the breaks.
5
Should your shoot be rained off, you may be asked to return on another day to complete the shoot. Please advise us so that we can ensure payment.
6
A full day on a film set for artists is 11 or 12 hours. Your co-coordinator will make a note of any overtime done. Nobody can say for sure what time you will finish.
PAYMENT
Most of the shoots done in South Africa are for overseas products. Therefore it can take up to 3 months for payment to come through. We will contact you once the payment has been finalized so you can collect your fee.
AVAILABILITY
Should you go on leave or be unavailable at any time please advise us accordingly
CONFIDENTIALITY
Your fees must not be discussed with other artists or crew members. Should you have a query about your fee, please feel free to discuss this with ACTION. JUST ENJOY – AND HAVE FUN!
